The Lafayette Madrigal Singers gave an outstanding performance that garnered a first place win in the 11th annual Margaret Comstock Chamber Choir Competition on Monday February 24.  The event is held at the School of Music on the University of Louisville campus in Margaret Comstock Concert Hall.  The event is hosted by the world-ranked University of Louisville Cardinal Singers.

This is the eighth first place win by the Lafayette Madrigal singers at this event.  The group competed against six other choirs from top choral programs in Kentucky.  This competition demands high-quality repertoire selections and outstanding performance from ensembles.  Each choir is required to sing one common piece that is selected as the compulsory piece each year.  Choirs compete in two rounds for a panel of judges and clinician. After the first round performance, choirs received a clinic session coached by Dr. Kent Hatteberg (Director of Choral Activities at the University of Louisville).  The competitors are narrowed to three choirs that compete again in a second round for final placements.  Adjudicators for the event were Dr. L. Brett Scott from Cincinnati Conservatory of Music, Dr. Bradley Naylor, Director of Choral Activities at Kentucky Wesleyan College, and Bomi Lee, Assistant Director of Choral Activities at the University of Louisville.

Mr. Marsh says, "Surprisingly, there aren’t too many high-quality competitive opportunities for concert choirs in our state or region.  The Comstock competition is always a highlight of the year for us.  The students improve immensely as a result of preparing for a performance where they will be heard critically.  Students get a chance to hear and learn from other choirs in an environment where everyone is supportive of each other.  Even though we are in competition, as long as there is great singing, everybody wins."

Senior Caroline Pellegrino says, “Comstock competition is always a wonderful and inspiring event that allows our choir to hear excellent choral groups from across the state.  We are able to grow not only as a team, but as musicians and performers."

Senior, Mary Lacy says, "Comstock gives us the opportunity to hear and observe other talented choral groups to see how we can improve as individuals and as a group.  It was an awesome opportunity for our choir to show the hard work we have put into our rehearsals."

Senior, Rowan Schaefer says, “Each year, Comstock fuels our motivation to improve as an ensemble.  It pushes us to advance and set new goals for ourselves both as a choir and as individuals.”

Some judges remarks:
"You are doing great work.  You change character and expression for each piece, and communicate it to the audience in your faces as well as in your singing.”  -Dr. Brett Scott

“Beautiful musicianship for every piece.  Beautiful character changes for each piece.”  - Bomi Lee

“Excellent repertoire.  The choir was the show, not the conductor – as it should be.”  - Dr. Brad Naylor
