Lafayette’s Choir Program was founded upon the school’s opening in 1939. The choir’s original director was Grace Dean, and her work created a strong foundation for the program today. Dean founded the Charmettes, the prestigious women’s choir, and the Chanteurs men’s choir. Lafayette Choir from its foundation has been known for performing the best in vocal literature.
We are very excited for friend of the choir, Dr. Richard Waters in the announcement of the publication of our commissioned work. Dr. Waters announced earlier this week that his composition, The Arrow and the Song will be published by Hinshaw Music. The work was commissioned in 2014 by the Lafayette Choir in celebration of the 75th Anniversary of Lafayette High School and the vocal music program. We are thrilled that it will be shared with many more choirs and their audiences. A recording of the work performed by the Lafayette Madrigal Singers can be heard in the SoundCloud player embedded below. Lafayette’s Choir Program was founded upon the school’s opening in 1939. Congratulations to the Madrigal Singers who delivered a stunning and unparalleled performance for the KMEA conference. The performance took place in the beautiful Cathedral of the Assumption. The choir received a 2 minute standing ovation! We are so proud of their hard work and dedication to the highest levels of artistry. We were also honored to have two of our administrators in attendance. Thanks to Mr. Jacobs and Mrs. Pleasant for your support!
From Mr. Jacobs (The following was sent in the weekly news to LHS faculty on Feb 8, 2015) Last week our Arts departments were on full display as music educators, students, and administrators from all over the state convened in Louisville, KY for the annual KMEA conference. It may be a bit of an understatement to say Lafayette stole the show… we were the show! First up—our arts department joined forces to show an innovative and collaborative approach to artistic performance combining elements of live music, beautiful dance choreography, original poetry, and live painting inspired by the feelings, rhythm, and tempo of the music the artists were hearing. Certainly this approach is something educators all over the state will be taking back to their schools and emulating. Thank you Cathy Rowland, Jason Sturgill, Karyn Combs, and Liz Prather for being pioneers in the field, and allowing our students to shine in the spotlight! Next, conducted masterfully by Mr. Phil Kent, our orchestra put on a show! Playing the likes of Gershwin and Haydn, they moved the audience who were amazed by the professional and flawless execution of the performance of our students (watch the entire performance at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yv_zqGEMZm8 ). Finally our Choir took center stage. In a beautiful gothic style Cathedral on 4th Street, our students and Ryan Marsh were inspiring. I am constantly amazed by the talent and skill of our musicians! The acoustics and picturesque setting of this cathedral provided our students the stage they deserved to showcase to the state what Lafayette can do. The crowd responded with a 2 minute roaring standing ovation, a scene that left me in goosebumps, observing Mr. Marsh and our students enjoying the crowd’s appreciation of their performance. The weekend ended on Saturday with our very own Phil Kent being named Outstanding Orchestra Teacher of the Year by the American String Teachers Association KY Chapter. Congrats to Mr. Kent on his very deserving acceptance of this distinguished award. Truly we have much to celebrate! Congratulations to our fantastic choir students who represented Lafayette this week at KMEA All-State Choirs. 30 high school all-staters (most in the state), and 14 freshmen all-staters. Way to go for delivering outstanding performances this week! Hannah Hetzel-Ebben was chosen as a soloist to sing with the KMEA Women’s Choir on Still I Rise! Rosa Mukandama was chosen as a soloist to sing with the KMEA JH Chorus. Congratulations to both for representing Lafayette so well. Check out our All-State Hall of Fame. Thanks to all our hard-working chaperones for All-State who made this week run so smoothly. Cindy Bennett, Diane Carter, Angie DiMeo, Tamara Fitch, PJ Danhires, Judith Burgess, Marchele Forish, Julia Hefner, Jaci Norman, and Patrice Perlman.
