Is Music the Key to Success?

10/14/2013

Picture
What is it about serious music training that seems to correlate with outsize success in many diverse fields?  This is the question asked by Joanne Lipman in this New York Times article.  The article profiles former Fed Chair, Alan Greenspan; movie man, Woody Allen; co-founder of Microsoft, Paul Allen, among others.

Joanne Lipman is a co-author, with Melanie Kupchynsky, of the book “Strings Attached: One Tough Teacher and the Gift of Great Expectations.”
"Consider the qualities these high achievers say music has sharpened: collaboration, creativity, discipline and the capacity to reconcile conflicting ideas.  All are qualities notably absent from public life. Music may not make you a genius, or rich, or even a better person. But it helps train you to think differently, to process different points of view — and most important, to take pleasure in listening."

Cookie Dough Sales

10/14/2013

Picture
Today and tomorrow we are kicking off our cookie dough fundraiser. This is always a great fundraiser for us as we often have repeat buyers anticipating the cookie dough sales. Also included with the sale are Candleberry Candles. Please support your student in this sale. Putting the order form in places of business is a great way to sell. (Remember you will also need to be able to deliver the cookie dough and it must remain refrigerated.)

Cookie Dough sells for $16-18 depending on type and Candles have varying prices. Please keep Cookie Dough and candles on two separate blue triplicate order forms. Please pre-collect money for this sale. The goal for this sale is 7 items per person or 5 items minimum. We will track our sales progress toward our goals each day.

Time is Short!  All orders and money should be turned in by 10/24 and 10/25 depending on which day your student has choir class. Please support our organization with your best efforts in sales.

Chorale to perform with noted composer

10/4/2013

Picture
The Lafayette Chorale has been invited to perform on the EKU Choir's concert of music by noted composer and pianist, Ola Gjeilo.  Mr. Gjeilo will be in residence on EKU's campus during the week of October 7 and will also work with each of the individuals choirs in rehearsal on Monday night.  The FREE concert will be held on Tuesday, October 8, 8PM at First Baptist Church, Richmond.  Each choir will sing a piece of their own as well as in combined performance of two works.  The Chorale will perform Ubi Caritas II: Through Infinite Ages.

Ola Gjeilo (pronounced Yay-lo) was born in Norway in 1978, and moved to the United States in 2001 to begin his composition studies at the Juilliard School in New York City.  Ola’s concert works are performed all over the world, and his debut recording as a pianist-composer, the lyrical crossover album Stone Rose (2L, 2007) was followed by its 2012 sequel, Piano Improvisations. Many of Ola’s choral works are featured on Phoenix Chorale’s bestselling Northern Lights album (Chandos, 2012), which is devoted entirely to his music for choir.  He especially enjoys writing music for choir, orchestra/symphonic winds, and the piano, while as a pianist, his main passion is improvisation, either solo or over his own ensemble works.  Presently a full-time composer based in the US, Ola is also very interested in film, and his music draws a lot of inspiration from movies and cinematic music.  Ola’s choral works are published by Walton Music/Edition Peters, wind band works by Boosey & Hawkes/Hal Leonard, piano pieces by Edition Peters. The Northern Lights, Piano Improvisations and Stone Rose albums are available at amazon.com <http://amazon.com/> and iTunes.
