Assessment Event Success!

3/24/2016

On March 8, the Lafayette Choir hosted our own performance assessment event at Central Christian Church in Lexington.  This was the first such event that we have sponsored on our own.  The format of this event included performance, clinic time with expert clinicians, and sight-reading assessment.  This event is similar to the KMEA model but differing in our incorporation of a live clinic time wherein our adjudicators can communicate directly with the choirs working concepts and techniques in addition to giving immediate feedback.  Opportunities for assessment of performance is critically important to the continued improvement of any musician or ensemble.

Advanced Women’s Choir, Singers, Chorale and Madrigals participated in this event. Read more below for some of the outstanding comments from the adjudicators:

Advanced Women’s Choir

– Dr. Greg Detweiler, Morehead State Univ.
“Excellent job!  Loved the literature choices."  – Jill Campbell – Asbury University

Two Student Finalists at UK Alltech Competition

3/7/2016

Congratulations to two of our 2016 senior vocal majors who both advanced to finals at the UK Alltech Vocal Scholarship Competition.  Quentin Prewitt and Hannah Hetzel-Ebben both advanced to finals.  Participation in the competition is by invitation only as a result of an outstanding audition for the UK School of Music.  The competition held on March 6, at the UK Singletary Center is a top scholarship competition for young singers.

Quentin received an encouragement award worth $5000 and all participants received $1000 scholarship for participation.  Both of these young women sang beautifully and represented Lafayette, SCAPA and their voice studios well.  We're so proud of your accomplishments!

About the Competition from UK Opera:
Top vocal students from around the world flock to the Alltech Vocal Scholarship Competition to compete for a $500,000 pool of prizes. Launched in 2006, the annual competition at the University of Kentucky marks a continued partnership between Alltech and the University of Kentucky Opera Theatre department. This partnership has created the largest vocal competition in Kentucky and positioned UK Opera Theatre as a Richard Tucker Foundation top recommended opera program. Alltech's support of this competition also led to Alltech being named a top ten company in the United States supporting the arts by the Americans for the Arts in 2012.
