Madrigal Singers Win First Place in UofL Comstock Competition

2/23/2016

The Lafayette Madrigal Singers gave an outstanding performance that garnered another first place win in the 11th annual Margaret Comstock Chamber Choir Competition on Friday February 19, 2016.  This is the ninth first place win by the Lafayette Madrigal singers at this event.  The event is held at the School of Music on the University of Louisville campus in Margaret Comstock Concert Hall and is hosted by the internationally recognized UofL Cardinal Singers.

The group competed against six other choirs from top choral programs in Kentucky and Indiana.  This competition demands high-quality repertoire selections and outstanding performance from ensembles.  Each choir is required to sing one common piece that is selected as the compulsory piece each year.  Choirs compete in two rounds for a panel of judges and clinician. After the first round performance, choirs received a clinic session coached by Dr. Kent Hatteberg (Director of Choral Activities at the University of Louisville).  The competitors are narrowed to three choirs that compete again in a second round for final placements.  Adjudicators for the event were Dr. Tom Merrill from Xavier University, Dr. Richard Waters, Director of Choral Activities at Eastern Kentucky University, and Dr. Chuck Lewis, Southern Baptist Theological Seminary.
"An exceptional oneness in your sound, articulation, tempo, dynamic, and stylistic interpretation - Wow!  Excellent Presentation!"
-Dr. Chuck Lewis
"Amazing performance today.  I simply forgot for awhile to write anything because I was just listening to your gorgeous music."
- Dr. Tom Merrill
"You truly capture and communicate the essence of every piece.  The entire program was an emotional journey."  - Dr. Richard Waters
